ASTA Participates in Industry Meetings

In September, ASTA staff participated in a number of industry meetings to represent the U.S. seed industry domestically and internationally.

NASDA

ASTA Director of State Affairs Pat Miller attended the National Association of State Departments of Agriculture (NASDA) Annual Meeting, September 25-29 in Saratoga Springs, NY. The meeting, which had record attendance, is an opportunity for the state agricultural department commissioners, secretaries, directors and staff to discuss common issues and establish policy guidance.

USDA Secretary Vilsack addressed the group and announced details of USDA’s $500 million grant program to increase American-made fertilizer production. The meeting was hosted by NASDA’s 2021-22 President, New York Commissioner of Agriculture Richard A. Ball.  Wyoming Director of Agriculture Doug Miyamoto will serve as the 2022-23 president.

Seed Congress of the Americas

ASTA staff joined over 400 seed industry professionals and regulatory authorities at the 8th Seed Congress of the Americas, organized by the Seed Association of the Americas, September 26-28 in Punta del Este, Uruguay. The three-day conference included working group meetings focused on specific topics, including intellectual property, phytosanitary and biotechnology. Plenary sessions covered a range of topics from innovation and new technology, to social and economic sustainability, to pest surveillance. CLA Annual Meeting

During the CropLife America (CLA) Annual Meeting, September 26-28 in San Antonio, TX, ASTA Vice President of Government Affairs Janae Brady served on a panel titled “A Focus on the States” where she discussed current policy around treated seed. The panel was moderated by Scott Dahlman, CLA. Other panelists included Sundari Kraft, Ascent Strategies and Karen Reardon, RISE.
