ASTA Promotes Safe Handling and Storage of Treated Seed During Harvest

Sept 23: As harvest begins across the country, the American Seed Trade Association reminds farmers about the importance of taking precautions to ensure treated seed does not enter the grain supply. Seed treatment technologies are an effective agronomic tool that provide seeds the necessary protection for a strong, healthy start but must be handled properly.

“Seed treatments give the plant a greater opportunity to grow a strong root system which is the foundation of a healthy, productive plant,” ASTA President and CEO Andy LaVigne said. “However, we must be diligent to follow state and federal guidelines for disposing of treated seed.”

Resources, such as The Guide to Seed Treatment Stewardship, are available to assist farmers. The guide is the result of partnership between ASTA and CropLife America to communicate the importance of proper handling, storage and disposal of treated seed. Farmers can also consult with their seed dealer. For more information, visit http://seed-treatment-guide.com/.

“The use of seed treatments maximizes the performance potential of each seed in order to meet the growing demand of food worldwide,” LaVigne said. “Following proper handling procedures may take extra time, but it is necessary to ensure the high quality feed and food supply for the U.S. and export markets.”
